For commercial concrete contractors, concrete work requires more than simply placing and finishing concrete. Proper preparation, placement, consolidation, finishing, curing, and quality control all play an important role in producing a long-lasting finished product.


Preparing for the Concrete Pour

Proper preparation of the subgrade is critical. The area must be properly excavated, graded, compacted, and prepared to provide a stable base. Concrete Vibrators

Proper consolidation is an important part of concrete placement. Internal concrete vibrators help remove trapped air and ensure that concrete properly surrounds reinforcing steel, embeds, and other obstructions.

Poor consolidation can lead to honeycombing, voids, and other defects that may compromise the finished product.

Proper Concrete Placement

Concrete should be placed as close as practical to its final location. Excessive movement or improper handling can contribute to segregation and make achieving a consistent mix more difficult.

Crew members need to work together to maintain a steady placement operation while avoiding unnecessary delays.


Screeding and Strike-Off

The screeding process establishes the elevation of the slab. Contractors may use traditional screeds, vibrating screeds, laser-guided equipment, or other systems depending on the size and specifications of the project.

On large commercial floors, accurate elevation control is especially important because even small variations can affect drainage, equipment installation, doors, and other building components.


Proper Finishing Timing

One of the most important skills in concrete construction is knowing when to finish the concrete.

Concrete changes continuously after placement. Temperature, humidity, wind, sunlight, mix design, water-cement ratio, and the use of admixtures can all affect setting time.

Experienced finishers watch the condition of the concrete rather than relying solely on a clock. The surface must be firm enough to support finishing operations without damaging the slab.


Saw-Cut Control Joints

Concrete naturally shrinks as it cures. Control joints provide a planned location for cracking to occur.

Saw-cut joints must be installed at the proper depth and at the appropriate time. Cutting too early can cause the saw to pull aggregate out of the surface, while cutting too late can allow uncontrolled cracking to develop.

The location and spacing of joints should be established during project planning and coordinated with the overall design.

Laser Screeds

Laser screeds use laser-guided technology to help establish precise elevations across large slabs. They can improve productivity and help crews achieve more consistent floor elevations.


3D and GPS Machine Control

GPS and 3D machine-control systems can help operators accurately perform excavation and grading work. These systems reduce reliance on manual measurements and can improve efficiency on large projects.


Digital Layout Tools

Modern layout equipment, including robotic total stations and digital measuring systems, allows contractors to establish building lines, elevations, anchor locations, and other critical points with a high degree of accuracy.


Concrete Testing and Quality Control

Technology has also improved the ability to monitor concrete quality. Contractors and testing laboratories can perform slump testing, air-content testing, temperature measurements, compressive-strength testing, and other quality-control procedures.

These tests provide valuable information about whether the concrete meets project specifications.

For example, commercial flatwork may require laser screeds, power trowels, concrete pumps, and ride-on finishing equipment. Structural concrete may require different forming systems, placing equipment, vibrators, and access equipment.

Safety Is Part of the Process

Concrete construction involves heavy equipment, rotating machinery, wet cement, moving vehicles, lifting operations, and other hazards.

Proper personal protective equipment, equipment inspections, operator training, housekeeping, and communication between crew members are essential.

Workers should also understand the hazards associated with wet concrete. Cementitious materials can cause skin irritation and chemical burns, making appropriate gloves, boots, eye protection, and protective clothing important when handling fresh concrete.

A productive concrete crew is not simply a crew that works quickly. It is a crew that works efficiently, safely, and consistently.


Experience Still Matters

Modern equipment and technology can improve concrete construction, but they do not replace experience.

A laser screed can establish an elevation, but an experienced operator still needs to understand the conditions on the jobsite. A power trowel can finish a large slab quickly, but the operator needs to know when the concrete is ready.

The combination of experienced craftsmen, proper planning, quality materials, proven techniques, and modern equipment is what produces successful concrete work.
